As part of our approach to learning, teaching and advocating for social justice and local civic engagement, since 2017 SAYHU collective members have organized an annual Summer Institute for South Asian youth in Houston, ages of 18 through 24. The Summer Institute is focused on fostering a deep understanding of the socio-political systems that impact their daily lives and cultivating community, peer-to-peer mentorship and connecting South Asian youth with local resources and opportunities. We invite organizers and educators, particularly South Asian community leaders in Houston, to participate in roundtable discussions to share knowledge with participants on a wide range of topics related to social justice.
Throughout the year, work to provide other workshops, trainings, and community-building activities, offering our community members numerous resources with which to develop applicable skills and language for transnational feminist social justice work.
In 2020, SAYHU has transformed our Summer Institute into an online experience, with networking and community building among participants happening on Slack. We modified our curriculum once more and the resources―with concepts and content that we had previously handed out to participants in our hard copy workbook―now available online to our broader SAYHU community.
The SAYHU Curriculum seeks to provide social justice education to our community at the intersection of feminist theory and immigrant experience in the US South that accounts for a diversity of South Asian diasporic identities and experiences in Texas. Our curriculum focuses on harnessing local political power, creating avenues for community advocacy, and building transformative leadership. We pay close attention to how gender, class, educational access, ability, as well as trauma and gender-based violence factor into so many aspects of the lives of our Southern South Asian community. Our curriculum pages continue to evolve and respond to community interests and needs.
We hope you will read, engage, question, learn from, contribute to, circulate and enjoy the SAYHU curriculum pages crafted over the years:
